  • SA Show Great Tenacity in Terrible Conditions at World Mountain Bike Champs

Posted on September 15, 2011 by James

    7 Sept 2011

The 2011 UCI Mountain Bike and Trials World Championships have come to an end with yet another spectacular display of mountain bike racing from athletes all over the world, with only one chance of having the perfect race run to earn the prestigious title of MTB World Champion.

South Africa had a very strong presence in amongst a quality line-up of international mountain bikers in the cross-country and downhill disciplines; four-cross and trials were also part of the event schedule.  The conditions certainly did not contribute to any meaningful challenge by the entire field of athletes and success was determined more by the elements, which in some instances had a ‘river’ of water running across the track.  Not necessarily ideal world championship conditions.

World medal contender Burry Stander faced misfortune in the Elite men’s right from the get go, when a poor start saw him fighting for positions from early in the race.  About mid way when the rain began to come down, Stander suffered a big crash on some wet, slippery roots, abruptly ending his race.

“Although the pro riders are prepared to race in any condition, it is the junior and U23 downhill riders that felt it the most this weekend,” said SA MTB Team Manager Bryan Strauss.  “And when it came to the Elite DH race, the conditions really opened up the field.

“It is clear to see who has been racing the world cups abroad this year,” continued Strauss.  “Our riders have the ability to compete against the best in the world, but gaining experience from regularly racing abroad is vital.  For instance, look at our downhill riders – the juniors find the racing quite overwhelming.  The tracks overseas cannot compare to anything in South Africa.  Everything is at least 3 times greater – the gap jumps, the steepness.  The riders have to adapt to these tougher conditions in a short space of time.”

Of special mention was the result during the team XCO relay race.  U23 rider Mariske Strauss had a big crash before completing her lap, with U23 Rourke Croeser breaking his chain 500m before the finish of his lap.  Luke Roberts (Junior) and Burry Stander (Elite) pushed hard for a clean run - the end result was Team RSA finishing 11th.  “With a clean run from all four riders, we could’ve moved our final position up at least five places!” said Strauss excitedly.

“The individual results were not what we had hoped for at these world championships, but each race experience is a building block for us of where we want to be.”

Congratulations to all riders who competed and did us proud!

WOW, what a lot of fun!!! We had great weather and awesome crew and fantastic technology to time the event. The cherry on top; the participants! Young and old, skilled and novice, everyone attacked the challenge with all they had. We saw the course record get blown away from 27seconds to 23,618 by Darryn "I have Wings" Stow That's him in the picture Below showing us that bridges are a waste of wood. A MASSIVE thanks go to MOBii for the timing system and their phenomenal Motion unit topped only by their dedication and efforts to make it all come together. As for our club members who volunteered their time and help on the day THANK YOU.  Prudence, Des, Kathy, Jackie, Mienke and Amanda making sure we had the data and the fuel to keep us going. Also the the families of those who helped, thanks for allowing them give of their time. A huge thank you to Alwyn (Slowcoach) for building the slalom course, putting together the whole  DS series and introducing us to a new way of having fun on a mountain bike!!! • Tygerberg Spur Interschools

Posted on August 24, 2011 by James

The inaugural Tygerberg Spur Interschools race kicked off at Meerendal on Friday...Congratulations to all of the 47kids who competed in the first Tygerberg Spur Interschools MTB Challenge last Friday, it was a great spectacle and fun to watch. The next one is on Fri 16th Sept, so don't delay kids, get your school to put a team in, even if it is two of you, as Spur are putting prize money up for grabs fr the biggest teamentries. Read Theresa's report below, but more importantly, it 'spurred' us on to thinking that we should get some of the kids who live on the farm to also compete. If you have an old bike in the garage we can fix it up and donate it to them. Email juniors@mweb.co.za

Tygerberg MTB Interschools Challenge, Friday 19th Aug.
Friday was the first race of our Tygerberg MTB Interschools Challenge and what a fantastic turn out we had! 47 riders dashed around the 4km course in 45min with over all winner being Manie Lubbe! Well done to all who participated. We were blessed with a gap in the clouds, so nobody got wet. The second race in the series will be taking place on 16th September, same place, same time, different route. The results are on our website, and some pictures of the day. We will be sending certificates to the winners schools for distribution. Thank you to Lolette for being the time keeper and Arno and Gary for mapping the route.
    Club Rides
Our club rides are still happening from 4.30 - 5.30pm on Mondays and Tuesday, starting at the Jip de Jager entrance to Majik Forest. As soon as it gets lighter we will be shifting the rides an hour later.
    Gravel Travel
I hope you have all entered one of the races on Sunday at Diemersfontein. We are looking forward to a great morning of riding. Just to confirm that I will be riding/sweeping the 20km route for any children that are interested in giving this distance a go. Some teens will be riding the 40km.
    Old Bikes and Helmets
We are requesting that if anyone has old bikes and helmets that are gathering dust in the garage to consider donating it to the club. We are hoping to introduce MTBing to the farm children on the farms with route we regularly ride on. We would like to include some of the Meerendal children on the 16th of September at the next regional race.

Please feel free to contact me should you have any questions relating to the junior club.

    Happy MTBing

  • Epic Winner and Marathon and Cross Country World Champion

Posted on April 29, 2011 by James

Christoph Sauser, joined us for an hour's ride from Meerendal.

Christoph Sauser leads the Club ride.   Oh no it's not, it's our Louw!

It is not often one gets a chanced to meet a super hero, but that's exactly what 30+ club members did last Friday afternoon when Epic Winner and Marathon and Cross Country World Champion, Christoph Sauser,  joined us for an hour's ride from Meerendal. The windy ride took it's toll on some, but the pace was easy and everyone had a chance to ride up beside him and have a chat. After the ride, we repaired to the Barn and Lawn for some excellent refreshment and a question and answer session with the very down-to-earth man who revealed his thinking about 29'rs and other things bike-related.  Our thanks go to Mike Powell from REEDS who organised the event, putting on a very professional show, and to Specialised who showcased their line-up of droolicious bikes for 2011.
